There is a current trend for designers and developers to build BuddyPress specific themes and plugins and the market seems to be growing by the day.
Usage:
I have personally used BuddyPress on many projects ranging from a global intranet to a local business network. The BuddyPress support forums are a bit slow to respond (if you use BuddyPress you can always help out!) but overall, if you’re thinking of building your own social network, don’t think about using BuddyPress, just do it!
